About the Project

Project RACRNH-RACRIM-I059(429) is located on I-59 in Trussville from the I-459 interchange to Chalkville Mountain Road (CR-10). It begins west of I-459 near Edwards Lake Road and ends north of CR-10, with an overall distance of approximately 4 miles.

The existing roadway in this area was constructed and opened to traffic in the mid-1970s. It has a concrete substructure that has been overlaid with asphalt several times. The condition of the approximately 50-year-old substructure is beyond repair and requires total reconstruction.

The purpose of this project is to replace a deteriorating roadway and provide much-needed additional capacity. The existing roadway will be reconstructed – both northbound and southbound lanes – incorporating an additional lane in each direction widened in median. Slab repair on I-459 from the junction to Exit 32 (US 11) and bridge deck replacements on I-59 over Edwards Lake Road will also be included.

Construction will be staged with varying lane closures and contraflow conditions.
