TRAFFIC ADVISORY
Northbound I-59 ramps to close at Chalkville Mountain Road
I-59 northbound at Chalkville Mountain Road (Exit 141)
Jefferson County – Starting on Monday, May 18, weather permitting, ALDOT will shut down both I-59 northbound ramps at Chalkville Mountain Road (Exit 141). The contractor is incentivized to reopen the entrance and exit ramps within 40 days.
During this time, motorists cannot exit or enter Northbound I-59 at Chalkville Mountain Road.
The closure is crucial in the next phase to widen I-59 to three lanes in each direction between I-459 and Exit 141.
On the same day, traffic will also shift to the left two northbound lanes to allow crews to work on the outside lane.
This creates a different traffic pattern for the movement from I-459 north onto I-59 north. Drivers should use caution when navigating the new temporary ramp.
Contractor Wiregrass Construction Co. has about four months remaining to open the widened northbound lanes to their new three-lane configuration to receive a $1 million incentive.
Last fall, they met both incentivized deadlines to open the southbound exit ramps and the widened section of I-59 to traffic.
The entire $70,377,212.87 project should be complete by Spring 2027.
ALDOT wants to thank community stakeholders for their help and motorists for their ongoing patience during the final phases of this highly impactful interstate project.
Our mission is to always provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound transportation network across Alabama.
